About healthy low pressure and your mattress-to-body pressure
The typical mattresses on the market today, whether constructed with traditional springs, or specialty NASA foam material, or even so-called adjustable airbeds, are incapable of effectively equalizing the pressure (from gravity) that the mattress exerts on the body.
They create high pressures on the body's prominences, particularly the hip, thigh, buttocks and shoulder areas. These areas of high pressure are particularly pronounced and magnified when side-lying. This is because the same weight is distributed over a smaller body-surface area, and also because the curvature protrusions of the hip and shoulder are usually more prounounced in a side-lying position against the mattress.

We test pressures exerted against the body with scientific "pressure mapping" instruments and computers. Following are actual pressure map images of 3 different leading mattresses versus NightCare. These tests were taken with the same person in a side-lying position (head on the left, feet on the right side of the image).
RED and ORANGE are not good. They are areas of high and very high pressure on the body, and commonly referred to as pressure hot spots. NightCare's technology and mattress, shown in the lower right hand quadrant, produces NO RED or ORANGE high-pressure areas.

DON'T BE FOOLED by competitors that show you pressure maps taken only in a back-lying position and not the side-lying position. Most people sleep most of the time on their side. The side-lying position generally creates substantially more pressure at the shoulder, hip and thigh, and in that sense is more problematic for good sleep. The side position is the truest test of performance !!
The Consequences of High (RED) Pressure
During sleep, mattress and pillow pressures can restrict blood flow in our skin's capilaries and result in tossing and turning (average 40-70 times per night) -- when the blood circulation is restricted by high pressure, the brain signals the body to turn. This tossing and turning throughout the night awakens the body to a degree and pulls it temporarily out of whatever stage of sleep the body happens to be in. This, in turn, diminishes the healing, restorative and rejuvinative power of the sleep throughout the night, and results in a lowering of sleep quality. Without sufficient shifting, pressure sore and pressure ulcers can develop, which by their nature become difficult to heal.

For a better and healthier sleep, it is best to avoid those regular mattresses that exert RED pressure points on the body during sleep whenever possible. We have not yet found or tested a mattress other than NightCare that meets this criteria.
You may think you are getting a sufficient NUMBER of hours of sleep, the interruptions to your sleep caused by tossing and turning, or any other factor, will reduce your sleep quality and concurrently cause an increase in any sleep deficit you may have. The fact is, whatever number of hours of sleep you are getting, these interruptions will leave you with diminished sleep quality and the resulting consequences to health, performance, well-being and spirit.
